Regular Council Meeting
Tuesday, February 18, 2003
Present for Roll Call:
Bausano, Bonenfant, Harrell, Lanctot, and Lutz.
Absent: Zei and
Zubiena.
Guests: James
Lemler, Daniel Mukavetz, Brian Mattila, Sharon Rastello, Adam Trebel and Edward
M. Vertin.
The meeting was
called to order in the Village Council Chambers by President Bonenfant at
5:30PM.
A letter of resignation was read from Treasurer Alice Peterson. Mrs. Peterson will retire effective May 1, 2003. The deputy treasurer will be asked to step up to the Treasurer’s position. If she declines, then an ad will be placed to look for a qualified candidate.
Village Administrator Vertin will attend an MDOT meeting in Champion on February 21, 2003.
A motion was made by Bausano and seconded by Harrell to donate $50.00 to the Copper Country AmeriCorp’s Alcohol Free Weekend in Houghton. Yes – Bausano, Bonenfant, Harrell, and Lanctot. No – Lutz. Carried 4-1.
A notice was received from Charter Communications that cable rates would increase $2.00 for expanded service.
A motion was made by Lutz and seconded by Lanctot to approve the minutes of the January 21, 2003 regular council meeting. Carried 5-0.
A motion was made by Harrell and seconded by Lutz to approve payment of the merchandise accounts in the amount of $64,911.52. Carried 5-0.
Committee Reports
Finance: A motion was made by Lanctot and seconded by Bausano to hold the Budget Hearing on Thursday, February 27, 2003 at 5:30PM. Immediately following at 5:45PM, a Special Meeting will be held to amend the current budget and approve the budget for next year. Carried 5-0.
Recreation: The annual Mite Tournament will be held this weekend at the George Gipp Arena.
Public Safety – Police/Fire: A motion was made by Bausano and seconded by Lanctot to approve the officers for the Laurium Fire Department. Carried 5-0. (A list of the officers follows the minutes).
Personnel – Police/DPW: No report.
Streets/Equipment/Sanitation: No report.
Property/Building/Ordinance: No report.
Beautification/Parks/Community Relations: No report.
Laurium Housing Commission: The vacancy still has not been filled. The Housing Board will consider a different meeting time. The Council can also think about drawing from Calumet Township residents in order to find someone interested in being on the Laurium Housing Commission.
New Business: At 5:46PM, a motion was made by Bausano and seconded by Lutz to enter into executive session to discuss DPW Union negotiations for health care coverage. Carried 5-0.
The meeting returned to regular session at 6:05PM.

Old Business: No response was received from 911 in regards to the letter sent last month. Discussion was held about summer fundraising at the George Gipp Arena.
