Regular Council Meeting

Tuesday, October 16, 2001

Present for Roll Call: Bausano, Bonenfant, Harrell, Johnson, Lutz, Twardzik and Zei.

Guests: Anita Campbell, Major Mike Farley, Walter Hamel, Bruce Joosten, James Lemler, Laura Sorvisto and fellow student and Dan Zubiena.

The meeting was called to order in the Village Council Chambers by President Bonenfant at 7:00PM.

Correspondence

Anita Campbell and Maj. Mike Farley from Calumet High School presented an overview of a community program, "United We Stand", to be held on November 10 at 3:00PM in the Calumet High School gym. This program will honor Veterans and the victims from the September 11 tragedy. President Bonenfant issued a proclamation showing the Laurium Village Council’s support for this observance. All were in favor.

Village Administrator Vertin sent a letter of support of WUPPDR’s application for a MDOT Enhancement grant to create an application for a proposed Heritage Route on M-26.

A motion was made by Bausano and seconded by Johnson to approve the minutes from the September 18, 2001 regular council meeting. Carried 7-0.

A motion was made by Johnson and seconded by Bausano to approve payment of the merchandise accounts in the amount of $35,780.11. Carried 7-0.

Committee Reports

Finance: Village Administrator Vertin stated that the state-shared revenues would hold equal to last year. However, the state is anticipating its revenues will be less than budgeted which would affect the village in the future.

Recreation: The committee needs to meet with Vertin before the next meeting to determine how the cable revenues will be allocated. An ad will be in the paper for zamboni drivers.

Public Safety — Police/Fire: No report.

Personnel — Police/DPW: No report.

Streets/Equipment/Sanitation: The new garbage truck should arrive later this week. A new loader is needed. The brakes are gone on the old one and the machine is not in use. Some dealers have come in and will give us bids. Zei is to continue to pursue this and get some solid cost figures. Vertin and Johnson will monitor the funds.

Property/Building/Ordinance: The corner post off of South Calumet is missing. It will be looked into.

Beautification/Parks/Community Relations: No report.

Laurium Housing Commission: No report.

New Business: A letter of congratulations and a certificate of appreciation on behalf of the Village of Laurium is to be sent to Calumet Township Supervisor Paul Lehto for the Distinguished Citizenship Award he was honored with at Northern Michigan University. The newsletter will be going out later this week. The fall cleanup is scheduled for October 29, 31 and November 2 and November 5,7, and 9. At 7:37PM, a motion was made by Johnson and seconded by Harrell to go into executive session to discuss DPW Union negotiations. Carried 7-0.

At 7:45, the regular meeting was called back to order.

Present for Roll Call: Bausano, Bonenfant, Harrell, Johnson, Lutz, Twardzik and Zei.

Comments: Harrell is to discuss with Chief Lemler what can be done about all of the stray cats in town. President Bonenfant would like to see 5 "Welcome to Laurium" signs erected and would like to have them budgeted for next year. Twardzik is to take charge of this project. Village expansion for the future was also discussed.

The meeting adjourned at 7:52PM.
