Department
of Public Works

Laurium's Department of Public Works (DPW) consists of five full-time employees led by Ed Sever.  All members are protected by the DPW Union and have a CDL license endorsement which allows them proper training in every aspect of their jobs.

The primary responsibilities of the Department of Public Works consist of snow removal from November through April.  They keep 11.99 miles of village streets free of snow using two graders, one plow, two end loaders, two sno-gos, six dump trucks, a sander, and a pickup with a plow.  A pickup with a  sander is used to keep the main sidewalks of Hecla Street, Depot Street and First Street free of snow.

During the summer months the DPW repairs any roadways which have been damaged.  They paint lines for parking spaces, as well as road lines.  The DPW also maintains the George Gipp Recreation area's playground, tennis court, and mows the grass on the Billy Miller Memorial Baseball Fields.

Another of the DPWs responsibilities lies in garbage removal.  The Village of Laurium provides garbage service to all village residents. Third Street and south have pick up on Tuesdays and residents living north of Third Street have collection on Thursdays. Garbage is limited to two cans and a reasonable number of bags each week. Special bags or cans are not required. To start or stop service at a residence, please call the Village Office at 337-1600 to make arrangements.

Furniture, such as couches, stuffed chairs, floor model TVs, mattresses and box springs, are collected at an extra charge. Please contact the Village Office at 337-1600 to make arrangements for payment and pickup. The village does not collect appliances or other metal objects, tires or paint with the garbage service. If you are in question about whether an item can be picked up, please call the number above for clarification.

Each spring and fall, the village provides a leaf and branch pickup. Residents can rake leaves and yard waste (or bag them) to the curb for pickup by the front end loader. The dates of these clean ups are scheduled when weather permits and an ad will appear in the Daily Mining Gazette, on the local radio stations and on this website.

During the summer, the leaf and branch pile is open from 6:00am-1:30pm. This composting area is located behind the baseball fields. Residents can drop off leaves, branches, and yard waste. No other items can be left there.
