Mr. Vivian created his fortune through mining. He then established the Vivian Department Store, founded the State Savings Bank, Sulky Race Track, and a baseball park in Laurium. With gardening as his hobby, Vivian built a conservatory onto the house and his flower garden was admired by many. The house contains six fireplaces with sandstone chimneys, and a tower on the third floor. Vivian's home was the site of his daughter Gertrude's wedding. The Calumet and Hecla Orchestra played from the balcony that overlooked the foyer.
